In those luminous eyes searching mine, I see fear, protectiveness, spunk, and curiosity I’d not imagined from marine critters. We evaluate each other, these creatures and I. Purists may dismiss this perspective as silly anthropomorphism. I disagree; science really knows so little about what makes marine life tick. Even as we marvel at their colors, textures, shapes, smells, sounds, motions and habits; those languages are outside our dimension — we little know what they express. Who are we to pronounce them less than conscious, sentient beings?
