The oceans are not vast emptiness. They are complex, delicate ecosystems full of lives playing out. Yet, humans collectively tend to care little for that which is far away or out of sight, and we treat the sea and its life as our quarry for sport and plunder. Humans’ destructive and over-fishing, pollution, and depletion of habitat enormously stress our oceans and reefs. Entire species once abundant are weakened or near extinct. For many, climate change impacts will be their end as ecosystems and food chains collapse. I believe sustaining our Earth as we know it will require new philosophies – lived economically, politically, and spiritually – that value and provide for holistic renewal of what is alive and what it needs to sustain.
